Welcome to West Nichold

Perched above Gilsland village, the Heart of Hadrian's Wall country, sits West Nichold Cottage, with spectacular views stretching from Hadrian's Wall to the Lake District fells & Scotland.

This is the perfect base to walk Hadrian's Wall, with Roman forts just minutes away, and to explore peaceful Northumberland, with quiet open roads and rolling countryside.

The cottage is situated on our 450 acre 'Wardrew' farm. Previously the land was used for sheep farming but is now on a journey as a nature recovery project. We currently have highland cattle, which are conservation grazers, a pig and periodically a few black faced sheep. Wildlife is increrasing and we have resident hares, stoats, badgers, roe deer and other mamals ranging across the land. Barn and tawny owls nest along with buzzard, kestrels and songbirds; we have peregrine falcons, goshaws as visitors from neighbouring land.

In spring / summer we have visiting swallows, cuckoos, house martins whilst we are encouraging the swift to nest and reestablishment of ground nesting birds on the moor.

  • Comfortable self-catering accommodation for up to 8
  • Carefully retained original features with modern facilities provided

The cottage which dates back to the 1600s was a fortified dwelling, built in typical Bastle House style, and has been sympathetically restored and converted.

Many of the original features have been retained including the sandstone built fortified walls, gnarled oak beams, arrow slit windows, sark boarded ceilings and hayloft steps.

West Nichold is the ideal place to get together with family and friends in any season.

Walking and cycling in a peaceful envoronment along quiet country roads and by-ways.

Local attractions along Hardian's Wall and environs.

Why not give it a try - you don't know what you're missing until you've visited?
